Detailed Solution

The term “jhum cultivation” means shifting cultivation. In this type of cultivation, small patches of land are cleared so that sunlight can reach the ground. The vegetation on the land is burnt, and ashes are spread, which contain potash to fertilise the soils. The cultivators broadcast the seeds and do not plant them. They do not plough the land. Once the crop is ready, they harvest it and move to other suitable lands, leaving behind the used land undisturbed for some time so that the land can replenish its lost mineral resources. It is a type of nomadic culture, and the British were upset with tribes that followed shifting cultivation in India.
