Detailed Solution

UPA stands for United Progressive Alliance. It is a coalition party formed by the Indian National Congress. UPA was formed after the general elections in 2004 when no single party could secure a majority on its own to form the government in the national legislature. It is an alliance of several national and regional parties. The Indian National Congress leads the UPA at the centre, with Sonia Gandhi as the coalition's chairperson. United Progressive Alliance is a predominantly centrist-leftist alliance. UPA registered its win again in the next general elections held in 2009 after winning in 2004.
