What does Waqf stand for?

The word Waqf comes from Arabic, meaning “to stop” or “to dedicate.” In Islamic law, it refers to a charitable endowment—a property or asset permanently dedicated to serve religious or social causes. 

Once a waqf is created, the ownership of the property is considered to belong to God, and the income or benefit from it is used for purposes such as education, helping the poor, maintaining mosques, or supporting community welfare. 

The founder (called the waqif) gives up ownership and control, ensuring that the benefit continues indefinitely. Waqf systems have existed for centuries, contributing significantly to social welfare, education, and cultural development in Muslim societies. Essentially, Waqf represents a perpetual charity that sustains social and religious institutions across generations.
