Detailed Solution

Westerly flow dominates the upper air circulation in mainland India.
The jet stream is a component of the westerly flow. They play an important role in the air circulation and formation of monsoons, cyclones, and other weather conditions. Jet streams are caused by the difference in pressure, moisture, and temperature between two places. The greater the difference, the faster the jet stream. During winter, the upper air westerly jet streams are focused in Asia. During summer, the high pressure weakens, and the upper air circulation is shifted northwards, leading to the withdrawal of westerlies from the southern slope of the Himalayas. This causes a wind direction reversal and results in monsoons' onset. In this way, the westerly flow dominates the upper air circulation in the Indian mainland.
