Detailed Solution

Refrigerated ships enabled perishable food items to be transported over long distances. Animals were shipped alive from America to Europe in the 1870s. When they reached Europe, they were slaughtered. The live transportation of meat was not easy. These live animals took up a lot of space on the ships. Many of them died on the voyage. Animals used to lose weight, become ill, or become unfit to eat during this transportation. The meat was expensive and not affordable for the poor people in Europe. Because of the high price, the meat was in great demand, and due to the transportation issue, production went down. The development of a new refrigerated ship technology helped overcome this issue in the early 20th century. As a result, food was transported over long distances.
