Beyond its long rule till 1989, the Congress experienced a sharp decline in its support and influence. The Indian National Congress was formed in 1885 and was also one of the driving forces behind the Independence of India. It played a dominant role in Indian politics at the national and state level for several decades after India’s Independence. It is also the reason behind the foundation of India being a modern secular democratic republic. It dominated the political sphere of India at the centre till 1977, then again from 1980 to 1989. However, multiple reasons and the emergence of popular leaders and parties had their support gradually declined since 1989. It continues to be one of the major political parties cutting across all social divisions in the country and acting as one of the most vigorous opposition parties.
