What happens during respiration?

Respiration is a process by which living organisms obtain energy from the food they consume. 

During respiration, oxygen is absorbed from the air or water and combined with food, such as glucose, to produce carbon dioxide, water, and ATP. 

This process occurs in eukaryotic cells' mitochondria and in prokaryotic cells' cytoplasm. 

It's important to distinguish between respiration and photosynthesis, which is the process by which plants and other organisms synthesise food from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight. 

Chlorophyll, a pigment found in chloroplasts, is essential for photosynthesis but not for respiration.
