When healthy seeds are placed in water, they may absorb moisture and begin germination. The process by which a seed sprouts and grows into a plant is known as germination.

If the seeds were dormant, being in contact with water may have stimulated them to begin growing. However, if the conditions for germination are not ideal, such as water temperature, light, or a lack of oxygen, the seeds may not sprout and grow.

Furthermore, seeds not adapted to growing in water may rot and die if left in it for an extended period.
