What happens when a bar magnet is broken into two pieces?
 

When a bar magnet is broken into two pieces, each piece will have two unlike poles. 

Magnetic monopoles do not exist in nature. When we break a magnet into two, both act as magnets, i.e both pieces have a north and south pole. In both of these pieces, the corresponding north and south poles remain on the sides as in the original magnet.
