Allolactose, which is an isomer of lactose is the inducer of operon. A few lactose molecules present in the cytoplasm of E.coli are metabolised into allolactose by β-galactosidase. When this inducer binds to the repressor and changes its conformation, the repressor protein cannot bind to the operator.
