In general, metals produce hydrogen gas and metal oxide, which, when dissolved in water, further dissolves to produce a metal hydroxide.

However, some metals directly produce metal hydroxide.

When calcium reacts with water, the reaction is less intense, hydrogen begins to float on the water, and bubbles of hydrogen gas adhere to the metal surface.

Ca + 2H2O  Ca(OH)2 + H2

When sodium is treated with water, a chemical reaction takes place. Sodium reacts very vigorously with water, and the reaction is highly exothermic, meaning that it releases a large amount of heat. The products of the reaction are hydrogen gas and sodium hydroxide.

The chemical equation for the reaction is:

2Na + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2
