Detailed Solution

Methane is an alkane with the chemical formula, CH4

When methane reacts with chlorine, a substitution reaction occurs and the organic product obtained is chloromethane.
CH4  +   Cl2 CH3ClChloromethane
However, the reaction does not stop there, followed by other reactions in which all hydrogen atoms in methane are replaced by chlorine atoms.

This means at the end, we get chloroform (CH3Cl), dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), trichloromethane (CH2Cl2), and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4).

 CH4+Cl2CH3Cl+HCl

CH3Cl+Cl2CH2Cl2+HCl

CH2Cl2+Cl2CHCl3+HCl

CHCl3+Cl2CCl4

These reactions proceed via a free radical chain reaction mechanism.

Hence option (B) is correct.
