Muscle cells have special proteins that change both their shape and their arrangement in the cell in response to nervous electrical impulses.

When a nervous electrical impulse reaches the muscle cell, it triggers a series of biochemical events. This electrical signal causes the proteins within the muscle fibers to change shape and arrangement. Specifically, the myosin filaments slide over the actin filaments, causing the muscle fibers to shorten or contract. This process is known as the sliding filament theory.

As the nervous impulse travels along the cell membrane and into the muscle fiber, it leads to the release of calcium ions. These calcium ions bind to regulatory proteins, such as troponin and tropomyosin, that control the interaction between actin and myosin. When these regulatory proteins change their shape in response to the calcium ions, they allow the actin and myosin filaments to interact more effectively, resulting in muscle contraction.

The ability of muscle cells to alter the arrangement and shape of their internal proteins in response to electrical impulses is a fundamental mechanism that allows for movement and force generation in the body. This process occurs in various muscle types, including skeletal muscles (which control voluntary movements), cardiac muscles (which control heartbeats), and smooth muscles (which control involuntary movements in organs).
