Bhabar is a dry forested area below the foothills of Garhwal and Kumaon. The Garhwal and Kumaon divisions of Uttarakhand state are home to the Gujjar cattle herders. Originally from Jammu, they came to the UP hills in the 19th century looking for good pastures and settled there. The Bhabar belt became the winter pastures for their cattle. It is a dry forested area located at the altitude of around 1000m, running in a west-east direction along the foothills of Garhwal and Kumaon, i.e. outskirts of the Siwalik range. With summer coming, they moved onto the high mountains containing vast pastures above 12,000 feet.
