Detailed Solution

A Graafian follicle is a mature, fluid-filled structure in the ovary that contains an egg ready for release during ovulation.

Structure and Function

  • The follicle is a sac filled with fluid that surrounds the developing egg (ovum).
  • It grows and matures inside the ovary during a woman’s menstrual cycle.
  • When fully mature, the follicle is called the Graafian follicle.

Process of Ovulation

Each month, one Graafian follicle bursts open and releases the egg into the fallopian tube. This process is called ovulation. It usually happens around the 14th day of a 28-day cycle.

Importance of Graafian Follicle

  • It helps in the growth and release of a mature egg for fertilization.
  • The follicle produces estrogen, a hormone that prepares the uterus lining for pregnancy.
  • After ovulation, it turns into a structure called the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone to support early pregnancy.
