Detailed Solution

A hernia is a condition where an organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscle or connective tissue (fascia) that normally contains it.

Common types:

  1. Inguinal (groin) hernia: intestine bulges through lower abdominal wall/groin.
  2. Umbilical hernia: near the belly-button.
  3. Hiatal hernia: part of the stomach pushes into the chest cavity via the diaphragm.

Symptoms often include a visible bulge, discomfort or pain (especially with strain, lifting, coughing), and sometimes no symptoms at all. Diagnosis is clinical (physical exam) and sometimes imaging. Treatment depends on type and severity.
