Lateral inversion means that the right of the object appears to the left of the image.
“When an image is formed in a mirror, the left side of the object appears at the right side of the image and vice-versa. This is called a lateral inversion.” For example, the image formed by plane mirrors is laterally inverted; that is, the left side comes to the right, and the right comes to the left.
