Detailed Solution

A neutralization reaction is a chemical reaction in which an acid reacts with a base to form salt and water. It typically involves proton transfer from the acid to the base, resulting in the combination of H⁺ and OH⁻ to produce H₂O, with the remaining ions forming the salt.

Neutralization is generally exothermic, and in aqueous solutions the net ionic equation is often H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l). Applications include antacid tablets relieving acidity, wastewater pH control, and soil pH adjustment in agriculture.

Examples:

  1. Hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide
    Molecular: HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l)
    Net ionic: H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O
  2. Sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide
    H₂SO₄(aq) + 2 NaOH(aq) → Na₂SO₄(aq) + 2 H₂O(l)

Alternative everyday example: Acetic acid (vinegar) + sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)

CH₃COOH + NaHCO₃ → CH₃COONa + H₂O + CO₂↑

This also releases CO₂, used in leavening and demonstrations.
