A quasi-static process (also called a quasi-equilibrium process) in thermodynamics is an idealized process that happens so slowly that the system is always infinitesimally close to equilibrium at every stage.

Key Characteristics Quasi Static Process

  • The process is carried out infinitely slowly.
  • Pressure, temperature, and other properties of the system remain uniform and well-defined throughout.
  • At any instant, the system is practically in thermodynamic equilibrium.

Quasi Static process Example:

  • Imagine compressing a gas in a piston.
    • If you push the piston very quickly, the pressure inside won’t be uniform → not quasi-static.
    • If you push it infinitesimally slowly, the gas adjusts continuously → that’s quasi-static.

Why Quasi Static Process is Important:

  • Quasi-static processes are theoretical models used to simplify calculations in thermodynamics.
  • Many formulas (like work done = ∫PdV) are valid only when the process is assumed quasi-static.
  • They represent the maximum efficiency path (e.g., reversible processes are always quasi-static).

A quasi-static process is a “slow-motion” thermodynamic process where the system remains in near-perfect equilibrium at all times. It’s not practical in real life, but extremely useful for analysis and designing ideal models like the Carnot cycle.
