What is a rocket and how does it work?

A rocket is a strong vehicle designed to move quickly through space. It works using the principle of action and reaction, also called Newton’s third law. Inside a rocket, special fuel burns to create hot gases. These gases shoot out from the engine at the back of the rocket. As the gas rushes downwards, it pushes the rocket upwards and forwards. Rockets are special because they can work in both air and empty space; they do not need air to push against. This makes rockets perfect for traveling from Earth to outer space.​
