A freshwater stream called a tributary enters a bigger stream or river. The main stem of a river is its larger parent. The confluence is the location where a tributary joins the main stem. Affluents, often known as tributaries, do not enter the ocean immediately. Instead, many tributaries combine to generate most of the big rivers.
