What is a supernova?

A supernova is a powerful explosion that happens when a large star reaches the end of its life. When the star runs out of fuel, it can no longer hold up against its own gravity and collapses. This collapse releases an enormous burst of energy, brighter than an entire galaxy for a short time. Supernovas spread important elements like carbon, oxygen, and iron into space, which later become part of new stars and planets.
