Detailed Solution

An Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped contraceptive device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.

  • It is a long-term and reversible method of birth control.
  • There are two main types:
    1. Copper IUD – releases copper ions that make the uterine environment unfavorable for sperm.
    2. Hormonal IUD – releases progestin hormone that thickens cervical mucus and sometimes suppresses ovulation.
  • IUDs prevent fertilization by blocking sperm from reaching or fertilizing an egg, and in some cases, they also prevent implantation.
  • They can remain effective for 3 to 10 years, depending on the type.
  • It is one of the most reliable and widely used contraceptive methods.
