Detailed Solution

A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances change into new substances with different properties. In a chemical reaction, the atoms of the substances (called reactants) rearrange themselves to form new substances (called products). During this process, heat, light, gas, or color change may occur.

Characteristics of Chemical Reactions:

  • Change in state (solid, liquid, gas)
  • Change in color
  • Gas evolution (bubbling or fizzing)
  • Formation of a precipitate (solid)
  • Change in temperature (heat released or absorbed)

Example:

Mg + O2 → MgO

Magnesium burns in oxygen to form magnesium oxide – a white powder. Heat and light are also produced.

Types of Chemical Reactions:

TypeExample
Combination ReactionH2 + Cl2 → 2HCl
Decomposition Reaction2H2O → 2H2 + O2
Displacement ReactionZn + CuSO4 → ZnSO4 + Cu
