What is common between olfaction and gustation?

Both nose and tongue detect dissolved chemicals. The neurons of the only olfactory epithelium extend from the outside environment directly into a olfactory bulbs in the brain. Gustatory receptor cells synapse with sensory neurons that carry the impulses to the CNS. Olfactory receptors are bipolar neurons; not specialised cells. Only gustatory receptors are present in the taste buds.
