What is Corrosion?

Definition:
Corrosion is a natural process where metals slowly get damaged or worn away by reacting with the air, water, or chemicals around them.

Explanation:
When a metal comes into contact with moisture (water) and oxygen from the air, a chemical reaction happens. This reaction causes the surface of the metal to change and form a weak, flaky substance. For example, when iron reacts with oxygen and water, it forms a reddish-brown layer called rust. This process of rusting is a common example of corrosion.

Why it Happens:

• Corrosion happens because metals try to return to their natural state (like metal ores) through chemical reactions.

• It usually occurs in wet or humid environments where water and oxygen are present.

Examples of Corrosion:

• Iron forming rust (brown coating on old iron objects).

• Silver turning black when exposed to air (silver sulfide formation).

• Copper forming a green layer (called patina) after reacting with moisture and air.

Importance:
Corrosion weakens metals and causes damage to buildings, bridges, vehicles, and machines. To prevent corrosion, people use paint, oil, or special coatings to protect metals.
