What is "detritus"?

In ecology, detritus is a matter composed of leaves and other plant parts, animal remains, waste products, and other organic debris that falls from surrounding terrestrial communities onto the soil or into bodies of water.

Detritus is made up of dead organic materials that have been broken down by bacteria.

Detritivores, also called decomposers, are organisms that consume detritus, or dead organic materials.
