How Doons are Formed

Doons are formed by the deposition of coarse alluvium (sediments like gravel and clay) brought down by rivers from the higher Himalayan ranges. Over time, these sediments filled up the depressions that were "sandwiched" between the Lesser Himalayas and the Shiwaliks, creating these distinctive, flat-floored valleys.

Famous Examples

The term "Doon" is most famously associated with specific valleys in India, many of which have become well-known regions and cities.

Dehra Dun: This is the largest and most famous Doon, and the city of Dehradun in Uttarakhand is named after it.
Patli Dun: Located within Jim Corbett National Park.
Kotli Dun: Another prominent example of this valley formation.
