Detailed Solution

Double circulation is the flow of blood in the human body through two separate loops – one between the heart and lungs, and another between the heart and the rest of the body. In humans, the heart pumps blood in two directions:

  • Pulmonary circulation: from the heart to the lungs and back
  • Systemic circulation: from the heart to the rest of the body and back

Steps in Double Circulation:

  1. Deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right side of the heart.
  2. It is pumped to the lungs to pick up oxygen (pulmonary circulation).
  3. Oxygen-rich blood returns to the left side of the heart.
  4. This blood is pumped to all body parts (systemic circulation).

Importance:

  • Keeps oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood separate
  • Improves efficiency of oxygen delivery
  • Maintains body temperature and energy supply
