El Nino is a warm ocean current that flows past the Peruvian coast in place of a cold Peruvian current every 2 to 5 years.
Under typical circumstances, Peru is a cold water current, whereas the ocean current over the Western Pacific (Indonesia and Eastern Australia) is warm and deep. The emergence of EL Nino reverses the conditions, resulting in warm conditions over the eastern Pacific (Peru coast) and cold conditions in the western Pacific. This condition is caused by the Southern Oscillation, which occurs between the Pacific and Indian Oceans and eventually leads to weak monsoons in the subcontinent due to the weakening of the monsoonal winds or trade winds.
