Electrolytic refining is a process used to purify metals, particularly copper, by using an electrolytic cell. In this process, impure metal is used as the anode, and a more pure metal is used as the cathode. An electrolyte solution, usually a solution of the metal salt, is used in the cell.

When an electric current is passed through the cell, metal ions from the impure anode are oxidized and dissolved into the electrolyte. These ions then migrate to the cathode and get reduced, resulting in the deposition of pure metal on the cathode.

Many metals such as copper, zinc, tin, nickel, silver, and gold are refined by electrolysis.

In this process, the impure metal becomes the anode and a thin strip of pure metal becomes the cathode. Solutions of metal salts act as electrolytes.
