Detailed Solution

In metallurgy, flux is a substance added to ores to react with gangue and form a fusible slag; in soldering, it cleans and improves wetting; in physics, “flux” can also mean a flow rate through a surface.

Metallurgical Flux

  • Purpose: Remove impurities by forming slag that floats and can be separated.
  • Types:
    • Acidic flux: SiO₂ removes basic oxides.
    • Basic flux: CaO, CaCO₃ remove acidic oxides (e.g., silica).
  • Examples: Limestone in iron blast furnaces; fluorspar to lower melting point.

Soldering Flux

  • Removes oxide layers, prevents re-oxidation, improves metal wetting.
  • Common types: rosin, inorganic (zinc chloride), no-clean formulations.

Physics Usage

  • Flux = amount of a quantity crossing a surface per unit time (e.g., magnetic flux, heat flux).
