Detailed Solution

A leaf is made up of four main parts: Leaf Base, Stipule, Petiole, and Lamina.

  • Leaf Base: This is the bottom part of the leaf where it attaches to the stem at the node.
  • Stipules: These are small, green, leaf-like structures on both sides of the leaf base. They protect the tiny buds that will grow into new shoots.
  • Petiole: This is the stalk of the leaf. It connects the leaf blade (lamina) to the stem. The petiole helps the leaf flutter in the wind, which cools it and brings fresh air. It also supports the leaf and carries water and nutrients between the stem and leaf.
  • Lamina (Leaf Blade): This is the wide, green part of the leaf where photosynthesis happens. The central vein in the lamina is called the midrib, and the smaller veins branching from it are called lateral veins.
