What is male and female heterogamety?

Male heterogamety means males produce two types of gametes, and female heterogamety means females produce two types of gametes.

• Male heterogamety: Found in humans and many animals. Males have XY chromosomes and produce two types of sperm (X and Y). Females have XX and produce only one type of egg.
• Female heterogamety: Found in birds and butterflies. Females have ZW chromosomes and produce two types of eggs (Z and W). Males have ZZ and produce one type of sperm.
