Detailed Solution

Double circulation means blood passes through the heart twice during one complete trip—once to get oxygen from the lungs (pulmonary circuit) and once to deliver oxygen to the body (systemic circuit); its significance is complete separation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, efficient oxygen supply, and higher blood pressure for active life.

In mammals and birds, the heart has four chambers—two atria and two ventricles. Deoxygenated blood from the body returns to the right atrium, moves to the right ventricle, and is pumped to the lungs through the pulmonary artery. After picking up oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide, the oxygen-rich blood travels via pulmonary veins to the left atrium, then the left ventricle, which pumps it under high pressure through the aorta to all body tissues. This two-loop movement is called double circulation.

CircuitPathMain purpose
PulmonaryRight heart → lungs → left heartGas exchange: add O₂, remove CO₂
SystemicLeft heart → body → right heartDeliver O₂/nutrients; collect wastes

Significance and advantages:

  • Complete separation of blood: Oxygenated and deoxygenated blood never mix, so tissues receive maximally oxygenated blood for efficient aerobic respiration.
  • High systemic pressure: The left ventricle can generate strong pressure for distant organs (brain, muscles) without damaging sensitive lungs, which receive lower pressure via the right ventricle.
  • Supports warm-blooded life: Efficient oxygen delivery helps maintain high metabolism and constant body temperature in birds and mammals.
  • Better control: Separate circuits allow the body to adjust flow differently to lungs and body during exercise, sleep, or disease.
