Detailed Solution

The midrib is the central, prominent vein found on the back side of a leaf. It plays an important role in supporting the leaf blade, which is the broad, thin, and expanded part of the leaf extending on either side of the midrib.

Functions of the Midrib

  • Provides strength and support, helping the leaf remain upright even in the presence of wind.
  • Ensures the leaf is properly exposed to sunlight for photosynthesis.
  • Contains vascular bundles (xylem and phloem) that transport water, minerals, and food throughout the leaf.
  • Along with the midrib (midvein), there are lateral veins that aid in transport and also provide mechanical support.

Additional Information

  • A typical leaf consists of a leaf blade (lamina), stipules, midrib, and leaf margin.
  • The shape and outline of the midrib are useful in identifying different plant species and families.
  • The arrangement of veins (midrib + lateral veins) is called venation, and leaves are often classified based on the type of venation.
