Detailed Solution

Osmoregulation in humans is the process of keeping the balance of water and salts in the body.

The human body is mostly water, and all cells need the right amount of water and salts (electrolytes) to work properly. If there is too much or too little water, cells can shrink or burst. Osmoregulation helps prevent this.

The main organ that controls osmoregulation is the kidney. Kidneys filter the blood and adjust the amount of water and salts that leave the body through urine.

  • When water is less: The hormone ADH (antidiuretic hormone) tells kidneys to save more water, so urine becomes concentrated.
  • When water is more: Kidneys release more water, and urine becomes dilute.

Other organs like skin (sweating), lungs (water vapor), and intestines (absorbing water) also help in osmoregulation.
