Examples of Osmosis

Plant Roots Absorbing Water: Plant roots absorb water from the soil through osmosis. The water moves from the soil (low solute concentration) into the root cells (high solute concentration). Red Blood Cells in Different Solutions: When red blood cells are placed in a hypertonic solution (high solute concentration), water moves out of the cells, causing them to shrink. In a hypotonic solution (low solute concentration), water moves into the cells, causing them to swell and potentially burst. Preserving Food with Salt: When salt is applied to foods like meat or vegetables, it creates a hypertonic environment. Water moves out of the food cells by osmosis, dehydrating them and inhibiting the growth of bacteria, thus preserving the food.
