What is PM Shri scheme?

It’s a centrally sponsored initiative launched in 2022 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The aim: to transform more than 14,500 existing schools across India into model or “exemplar” institutions. These schools will showcase the vision of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) emphasising quality, inclusivity, infrastructure and 21st-century skills. 

Key objectives

• Upgrade infrastructure in selected schools (smart-classes, digital libraries, labs, eco-friendly features).
• Provide equitable, inclusive and joyful learning covering all students—no one left behind.
• Align with NEP 2020 norms: multidisciplinary learning, skills development, modern pedagogy.
• Serve as exemplar / showcase schools that others can emulate, not just one-off projects.

Features & implementation

• Selection of schools is competitive (“Challenge Mode”)—schools apply online, states/UTs participate.
• Funding pattern: for most States 60 % Centre : 40 % State. For North-Eastern & Himalayan States the ratio is 90 : 10.
• The scheme covers all types: elementary, secondary and senior secondary schools under Central, State, local bodies, including bodies like Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.
• Focus on infrastructure (digital learning tools, smart classes, green practices, water conservation, waste management) as well as pedagogic quality.
