Interference of religion by the State as per the Constitution is principled distance. Indian secularism differs from the prevalent conception of secularism as it is practised in the United States of America in one important way. This is so that the State can interfere in religious concerns, unlike American secularism, which strictly separates religion and the State. These values act as the yardstick by which we assess whether the State is acting under secular norms.
