Sal was a type of tree. Tribal groups frequently relied on animal hunting and foraging for food, for forests were vital for survival. Such a tribe lived in the forests of Orissa, and they were known as Khonds. They conducted group hunts regularly and would later split the meat among themselves. They cooked using the oil they extracted from the sal, a type of tree, and mahua seeds and consumed fruits and roots they had taken from the forest. They also sold forest food in the neighbourhood markets and utilised a variety of forest plants and herbs for medical purposes.
