What is seminormal and decinormal?

Seminormal and decinormal are terms used to describe concentrations of solutions in chemistry.

Seminormal Solution

• It means half-normal (0.5N).
• “Semi” means half, so a seminormal solution has half the amount of solute compared to a normal solution.
• Example: A seminormal solution of HCl contains 0.5 equivalents of HCl per liter.

Decinormal Solution

• It means one-tenth normal (0.1N).
• “Deci” means one-tenth, so a decinormal solution has one-tenth the amount of solute compared to a normal solution.
• Example: A decinormal solution of NaOH contains 0.1 equivalents of NaOH per liter.
