What is the 34th Native Infantry?

The 34th Bengal Native Infantry was a regiment of the Bengal Army, the army of the British East India Company. It was composed of Indian sepoys commanded by British officers. The regiment gained notoriety after Mangal Pandey’s mutiny. In response to his actions and the growing unrest, the British authorities disbanded the 34th B.N.I. regiment in May 1857 as a punishment and to prevent further rebellion.
