Detailed Solution

The respiratory membrane is a thin layer of capillary and alveolar walls where gaseous exchange occurs between the air in the alveoli and the blood in the capillaries. The solubility of carbon dioxide in water is about 20-25 times higher than that of oxygen. This difference in solubility means that carbon dioxide can diffuse across the respiratory membrane more easily than oxygen.

As a result, carbon dioxide is efficiently eliminated from the body through exhalation, while oxygen is taken up by the blood and transported to the body's tissues to support cellular respiration.
