Books were printed in China starting in AD 594 by rubbing paper, which was also created against the inked surface of woodblocks. The traditional Chinese "accordion book" was folded and stitched at the side since both sides of the thin, porous sheet could not be printed. Highly talented artisans could perfectly replicate the elegance of calligraphy in these books.
