The bony structure that forms the head and face, encasing and protecting the brain, is known as the human skull. It is made up of 22 bones connected by sutures, including the cranium, jaw, cheekbones, and facial bones.

The skull also serves as a point of attachment for muscles that control facial expressions, chewing and swallowing, and other movements.

The skull protects the brain and spinal cord, houses sense organs such as the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, and serves as a conduit for communication between the body and the outside world via its openings for breathing, seeing, hearing, and speaking.

The heart and lungs are protected by the ribcage whereas the liver is partly protected by the ribcage. In fact, it is so tightly packed into the ribcage that a slight impression is often left on the top of the liver.
