Detailed Solution

Concept- A Nicol prism is a type of polarizer, an optical device used to produce a polarised beam of light. It is made in such a way that it eliminates one of the rays by total internal reflection, i.e the ordinary ray is eliminated and only the extraordinary ray is transmitted through the prism.
The fundamental purpose of a Nicol prism is to transform any unpolarized light into plane polarised light. As a result, we must examine the fundamental elements that make up the Nicol prism. Calcite, sometimes known as Iceland spar, is the material used to build the Nicol prism.
CaCO3 is the primary component of the substance known as calcite. When using calcite, another substance called canada balsam is put in the middle of the two rectangular sheets to create a prism. Unpolarized light is transformed into plane polarised light at the other end of the prism as it enters from one end.
Hence, option 3 is the correct answer.
