In anaerobic digestion, methanogenic bacteria produce a mixture of gases, such as methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide as the substrate (cow dung) is rich with cellulose.. This mixture of gases is known as biogas and can be used as a source of energy as it is inflammable.

(1) Unlike biogas produced during sewage treatment, only H2 and methane are present in biogas but not sulphur, as the substrate is cellulose rich.

(2) Nitrogen is not present in biogas.

(4) Oxygen is not present in biogas.
