Low Earth orbit (LEO) is a path close to Earth, usually from about 160 to 2,000 kilometers high. Satellites in LEO circle the Earth quickly and pass overhead many times each day. Geostationary orbit is much higher—about 35,786 kilometers above Earth. Here, satellites move at exactly the same speed as Earth rotates, so they appear fixed above one spot on the ground. LEO is good for scientific research, imaging, and the space station. Geostationary is perfect for weather and TV satellites needing constant coverage of a region.
