At an electrical synapse, impulses conduct directly between the plasma membranes of adjacent neurons through structures called gap junctions. Because action potentials conduct directly through gap junctions, electrical synapses are faster than chemical synapses. Electrical synapses are rare in human neural system. Impulse transmission occurs in only one direction across chemical synapses because only synaptic end bulbs of presynaptic neurons can release neurotransmitter, and only the postsynaptic neuron’s membrane has the receptors for neurotransmitter.
